By Brian Fong Q. Can you really tell anything about someone’s intelligence by having them take an IQ quiz? A. The answer to this question requires a bit of background information, so let me put my professor hat on and tell you a story. An IQ quiz measures a person’s Intelligence Quotient (IQ). IQ is calculated using this formula: IQ = 100 MA/CA where MA = Mental Age and CA = Chronological Age. The IQ test was originated back in 1905 by French psychologist Alfred Binet and his physician research partner Dr. Theodore Simon. These two guys came up with the “Binet Simon Test”. This test’s purpose was to measure the intelligence of retarded children. The test was based upon several observations: 1. Children grow more mentally capable as they grow older 2. Some children perform at higher grade and age levels than their actual grade and age level. While other children are just the opposite. The mental age (MA) portion of the formula is the age level that the child is found to perform at. For example, a 6-year-old who performed at the level of an 8-year-old, is assigned a MA of 8 and, of course, a CA of 6. Conversely, an 8-year-old, who performed at the level of a 6-year-old, is given a CA of 8 and a MA of 6. With me so far? If you are then you’ve already passed my IQ test because I’m starting to get confused and I’m the one who is writing this article! 3. Binet and Simpson also discovered that these gaps between MA and CA grew wider as the children aged. Our child who had a MA of 8 when he was 6, was found to have a MA of 12 by the time that he reached age 8. Conversely, the child who had a MA of 6 when he was 9, had a MA of 8 when he reached 12. 4. They also noticed that although the MA/CA gap widened as the children grew older, the ratio of MA:CA remained constant. This constant ratio was called the “Intelligence Quotient”. The IQ quiz, or IQ test, was developed as a way of determining the MA:CA ratio of any person at any age. So, what (if anything) can be deduced about a person based upon the results of an IQ quiz? According to an article “The General Intelligence Factor”, Scientific American Presents “Exploring Intelligence”, pg. 24, 1999, author Linda Gottfredson writes: “Adults in the bottom 5% of the IQ distribution (below 75) are very difficult to train and are not competitive for any occupation on the basis of ability. Serious problems in training low-IQ military recruits during World War II led Congress to ban enlistment from the lowest 10% (below 80) of the population, and no civilian occupation in modern economies routinely recruits its workers from that below-80 range.” “Current military enlistment standards exclude any individual whose IQ is below about 85.” “Persons of average IQ (between 90 and 100) are not competitive for most professional and executive-level work but are easily trained for the bulk of jobs in the American economy. By contrast, individuals in the top 5 percent of the adult population can essentially train themselves, and few occupations are beyond their reach mentally.” “People with IQs between 75 and 90 are 88 times more likely to drop out of high school, seven times more likely to be jailed, and five times more likely as adults to live in poverty than people with IQs between 110 and 125. The 75-to-90 IQ woman is eight times more likely to become a chronic welfare recipient, and four times as likely to bear an illegitimate child than the 110-to-125-IQ woman.” Wow, those are some pretty dramatic conclusions that are based solely upon IQ as determined by an IQ quiz. What am I doing wrong? All of us have sought answers to these questions dozens of times. Have you found the answer yet? We all have some sort of dubious answers as to why they happen. Many are good events, and many are bad things. Maybe its just fate, or just coincidence. Your faith might have something to do with it. But, how could that be? God doesnt torture us, or intentionally lead us astray. Does he? Ten Steps To Find The Inevitable Answer: 1.Take a good look inside yourself. 2.Examine in detail how each sudden turn in the path altered your life. 3.List all of the reasons why you think that turn has unexpectedly made your life better in one way or another. 4.Make a list of all of the problems and difficulties that would have taken place if your life had not taken a turn. 5.Compare the lists you just created and discover the hidden connections.6.Allow you mind to bring those connections into reality. 7.Find the inevitable answer. 8.Notice how unexplainably your life becomes more peaceful and fruitful.9.Later, take a good look back and it all becomes understandable. 10.Recognize that you dont just think it, you know it! Then pay particular attention to what effect it had in the long run. Were you removed from a bad environment? Could you have been forced into a decision that you hated to make, and later you found peace with it? Well, you arent alone there. Look critically for the positive results. They are there! Every one of these events has a positive spinout even though it doesnt look or feel like it in the beginning. 3. List all of the reasons why you think that turn unexpectedly made your life better in one way or another: Have you ever heard, What you think in your mind will actually cause the future to abide by that? Its true. Do not think about listing all the negative things that you think was the result. It is amazing how many positive thoughts come up, that you hadnt ever thought about. Give yourself a break! It will blow your mind! 4. Make a list of the problems and difficulties that would have taken place if your life had not taken a turn: Surely you know where you were headed, but were just avoiding the issue. You say, No, I never thought about it. Heres the chance to drum up some negative thoughts that produce a positive result. Hidden in the mind are all these thoughts. But when you sit down to write them out, they are uncovered, like a miracle. Try it! See what happens! What may seem so terrible in the beginning will actually turn out to be a blessing in disguise. It may take time to see it, but eventually you will know it. Dont trouble your soul with doubt. Its a free handout that comes with faith. Take the handout and make a better life for yourself. That in turn will enrich all those around you. 5. Compare the lists that you just created and discover the hidden connections: Buried within this pile of words is a revelation. Open your mind so that you can feel it. You will see that the sudden turn in your living path has certainly thrust you into a new and powerful hold on the value of your soul and life. Sounds like a bunch of BS. Right? If you look at the direction you might have been going, that kink in the path that happened, and where you find yourself now, there is proof of the epiphany. 6. Allow your mind to bring those connections into reality: Just take a close look around you. What do you see that is there now, and wasnt there before? You can, if you look hard, see that all those things that were leading you down the wrong path have changed. The changes place you in a unique position to grab onto opportunities that would never have existed before. See it and believe it! 7. Find the inevitable answer: You cant fight it. Remarkable as it seems, all these things happen for a reason. The reason only becomes obvious with time. Faith in a higher power permits the vision to come into focus. Then you will know the true answer. God walks beside you all the way through your journey. Skeptics will ponder and wander, forever. You wont. 8. Notice how unexplainably your life becomes more peaceful and fruitful: Wow! You do feel the peace of mind. You experience the calmness of your soul. No one can convince you to believe anything different. Trying to explain the changes and the emotions that you now feel is easy and unnecessary. What is so exciting about it is that all of those around you see this happening, and brings them closer to you than ever before. Nothing is better than that. Agreed? Your business starts booming, you get a promotion, you dont seem to be in a continuous struggle anymore, or someone special comes into your life. You will see your life expanding into productiveness, compassion, desire to help others, and satisfaction. Thats what we call caring. 9. Later, take a good look back and it all becomes understandable: With the maturity of age and the wisdom brought about by experience and knowledge, we are able to look back at our lives with generous regard. There is no criticism, no judgment, no punishment that you previously laid on yourself. You did the best you could under the circumstances, and all you need to do is forgive yourself. Just say out loud, I forgive me for all those things. God has already forgiven me. 10. Recognize that you dont just think it, you know it: Sometimes we just dont stop to think about it. The gains of happiness, love, and faith creep up on us so subtly that it just seems to be a natural occurrence. It isnt! We were being led through life with a guiding hand. And, at the same time, following the plan set up for us at the instant we were born. We do choose the path we want to take to get there. But, if you notice, all the paths are heading in the same general direction. Getting sidetracked here and there is just part of the life-game. Now that you know, make it count! By Chuck McKay Im constantly amazed by all of the media reps from all of the different media outlets that can help your advertising to reach the right people. Why am I amazed? Because they all reach the same people. Dont believe me? Start with radio - theres more information available, and the radio reps are eager to share it. Ask em for exclusive cume figures. (Cume is the cumulative total of different people who tune in to the station each week. Exclusive cumes are people who dont listen to any other radio station). Youll find, as I have, that the exclusive percentage is usually around 3% - 4%. Occasionally youll find a truly unique format, like Christian, or Classical, or Korean. In these situations you may find exclusive cumes as high as 15%. But as rare as those formats are, exclusivity is even more rare. Television? TV is harder to demonstrate, since people tend to watch programs instead of stations. However, that fact alone should make my case. No television station ever has an exclusive audience. Newspapers? Not them either. And not outdoor, or cable, or point of purchase, or specialty advertising (like calendars or pens or Rubic’s Cubes with your name on em). Nope. Absolutely no medium, absolutely no media outlet, has an exclusive hold on the right people. With only minor variations, everyone is reaching the same audience. According to Wizard of Ads research, approximately 70% of all of the radio stations in America, for instance, are suitable for advertising whatever you offer. And yet, we keep listening to the Weve got the right people pitch. We want to believe it. We want to believe that just a simple minor modification to what were already doing will make us incredibly successful. We have a great offer. We just need to reach the right people. So we let the media reps perpetuate this nonsense. We should hold them accountable for consultation on improving the impact of our messages. Instead, we let them convince us that folks who read their newspaper, or watch their TV station, or listen to their radio station, or view their outdoor ads are the right people. And theyre wrong. No need to fuss at em. Most are just repeating what theyve been told. But they are wrong, none the less. They dont have a lock on the right people. They share the right people with every other media outlet in town. Please dont misunderstand. Im not saying that it doesnt matter where you place your ads. It does matter. But not for the reason youve grown accustomed to hearing. It matters because one exposure to an ad almost never leads to a sale. Regardless of the medium you choose, your ad needs to be repeated a number of times each week to make acceptable impact. The correct media outlets are those that allow you enough exposures while staying within your budget. In other words: the less expensive choices. They may well be the smallest media outlets in the market. Can you reach enough people this way? You tell me. How many additional sales each week do you need to reach your goal? Ten? Fifty? If you get the same response as direct mail and most internet sites, about two percent of the audience will purchase. So for ten additional sales, you need to reach an audience of only 500. Is there a newspaper that doesnt reach 500 people? A radio station? A billboard? A cable tv system? For fifty more sales youll need an audience of only 2,500 assuming that your offer interests them. It pretty much always costs less to reach 2,500 potential customers twenty times, than to reach 50,000 once. And as we said, very few things will sell on the strength of a single exposure to your ad. Face it. Ninety-eight percent of the people in any audience have minimal interest in what youre selling. How do you reach the two percent who are interested? You write better ads. Then you put those ads into an efficient media buy. You write ads that appeal to the right people. But thats a subject for another time.
