Pest Control - Mice

Friday, December 21st, 2007

By Stephanie McIntyre Winter is here, which for some people means; they’ll soon have mice. It’s the time of the year when mice migrate indoors to find warmth, shelter and food. This can present a real problem because once they establish themselves in the home they are difficult to get rid of. Mice can cause a lot of damage and cost homeowners a great deal of money in the process. They may not eat all that much, but they tend to contaminate much more than they eat. Between their droppings, urine and gnawing, they can necessitate the need to throw out a significant amount of food and clothing. And they can cause electrical problems and fires by chewing through wiring. They are also vectors for such diseases as salmonella and the deadly Hantavirus. So while having mice may not seem to be as bad as having rats, in reality, mice cause far more damage. They’re just not as scary. You may have a large infestation of mice and not realize it for some time. They generally are nocturnal, so you may not see them; you have to recognize their presence through the signs that they leave. The most obvious are their droppings, which are (1/4″) dark little logs. Seeing these some place in your home is a sure sign that you have mice. You may also hear them running or squeaking in the walls of your home, or notice where they’ve been and what has been damaged. You can catch mice with traps but they must be placed in the right location and baited with the foods that mice prefer. There’s little point to placing traps where mice will never encounter them, or using bits of food that won’t draw them to the trap. You need to put traps and baits in the places where mouse activity has been detected. Though mice are curious creatures that will investigate new objects in their paths and territories, they tend to stick close to walls when traveling. So place traps and baits where you know they’ve been or where they’re known to travel. Mice will eat a variety of foods and will nibble at many different types. They especially like high-fat and high-protein foods like nuts, bacon, peanut butter, and sweets. Their favorites though are grains and seeds. The first places you see evidence of mice may be where these types of foods are stored. There are a number of options available to the homeowner to use to control mice. There are mousetraps, poisons and toxic baits and glue boards. Toxic baits known as rodenticides contain seeds or grains to attract the mice so they will eat the bait. They are best placed in numbers close to the spots where mice live. Care must be taken with placement though since they are potentially toxic to children and pets. The active ingredients in these bait kills by preventing the mouse’s blood from clotting, and causing internal bleeding. When there is concern over the use of poisons, glue boards are a safe alternative to use. When mice run over a glue board they are stuck to it, which eventually causes their suffocation. There is no real danger for children or pets from a glue board because even if they become stuck to one it can be removed with minimal difficulty. Traps are another safe alternative to poisons. There are 2 common varieties. The spring-loaded snap-traps and the multiple catch type. The spring-loaded snap-trap can be baited with a mouse food favorite. But the newer expanded trigger varieties don’t have to be baited, just placed in a known mouse pathway. The multiple trap type of mousetrap can catch a number of mice before it needs emptying. A big advantage of traps is that you won’t have the odor of dead and decaying mice coming from the walls. When you catch or kill a mouse, take precautions when disposing of it. Wear gloves and bag the mouse, to prevent coming in contact with any of the diseases they carry. Stephanie McIntyre and Wendell Bryant are Internet developers. Losing Weight Can Make You Fat - Don’t Let It Happen To You!

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

By Steven Godlewski Whether you just want to lose five pounds or fifty pounds, your diet can make you fat! In fact, many people who are just a few pounds overweight go on a diet, only to weigh an additional ten pounds before six months have passed. This is because when we diet, we aren’t usually losing fat - we are losing the lean muscle mass that our bodies need in order to lose the fat! Because we are not losing fat, the weight (muscle) we have lost is eventually regained - but it comes back as fat instead of lean muscle mass. So, the next time you diet, and see that you have lost ten pounds, you better believe you have really lost something - something important! Instead of spending a great deal of money to replace your wardrobe - in your new smaller size - you may as well go ahead and buy clothing in at least one size larger than you were wearing before your diet! If you are overweight, you are probably thinking that this is catastrophic, depressing news - but there is a way to lose weight, without losing that muscle that you need. If you do it the right way, your diet won’t even be very hard, and when you buy those clothes in that new smaller size, it will be money well spent! First, seek the advice of your doctor. He will suggest a change in your diet and recommend an exercise program. The diet may be a low calorie diet, or a low-carb diet, depending on your likes and dislikes where food is concerned. Note that it is extremely difficult to remain on a diet where you don’t like the food, or you can’t eat the foods that you do like. Take this into consideration when discussing your diet with your doctor. Also note that fad diets are just that - fads. And the weight you lose will be a fad as well. Go with a sensible diet - one where you eat normal’ foods that don’t cost a fortune, and above all avoid all liquid diets! When it comes down to it, it really isn’t about what you are eating, but how much you are eating. However, it is a good idea to choose foods that you can eat more of. For instance, you can choose to have French fries or a baked potato. The French fries are full of grease, and therefore calories and fat. The baked potato on the other hand (without all the fixings) is very low calorie. You can have something else to go along with the baked potato, such as another vegetable and a small portion of broiled meat, but you can only eat two French fries without blowing your diet! Choose wisely, and always choose the one that allows you to put the largest amount of food in your mouth, without blowing your diet. Next, learn to feed your muscles. Muscles require protein in order to fuel the body’s fat-burning system. You need those muscles to be able to perform their job perfectly! A good product for feeding muscles is Protein. Also make sure that you are giving your muscles plenty of water. Eight to ten eight ounce glasses each day are needed. Next, make time to walk each day. Walk as far as you can, and increase the distance as you are able. As you gain more energy - and you will - add a strength training program three times a week. Before long, you will be shopping for that new wardrobe. You will be at your weight goal, you will feel good, and your muscles will be in excellent shape to help you keep the weight off! Creating Your Unique Selling Proposition or USP

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

By Andrew Ludlam Creating Your Unique Selling Proposition “Don’t tell them what you do. Tell them what you do for them. To capture a larger market share and remain profitable, you absolutely, positively need to distinguish your products and/or services from your competitors. In other words, you need to make your business special in the eyes of your clients: You need to create a Unique Selling Proposition, or USP. So what is a USP? Simply put a USP is that one distinct idea that sets you and your business apart from your competitors. Or put bluntly it’s your response to the question Why should I buy from you? The competition out there is relentless and the chances are you already work in a very diluted business sector. So, what is going to make you stand out, what is going to get your business get noticed? What’s the one clear and overriding reason why I should do business with you? I’m looking through the Yellow Pages, visiting your website, reading your letter, so tell me, Why the hell should I buy from you? Don’t say, because we offer great customer service, or we offer a service that’s at a price right for you don’t we all?! Think about what makes you unique what’s the one thing that your business offers, something so compelling that I’m going to contact you and nobody else? Why should I, your prospect, choose to do business with you versus any and every other option available to me in your category? Deciding on your Unique Selling Proposition can take time, and perhaps you don’t know what it is Yet. If this is the case, then I have three powerful ways that you can use to generate your USP. Firstly, ask yourself these questions: What is my business really good at? What aspect of my business is totally unique? What do I provide that no other competitor does? Secondly, ask someone else. Ask a client why they use you what is it about company that they like? This can be extremely revealing, as very often their objective view point can turn up something very different from your own perceived USP. Thirdly, imagine you’re the customer. Come up with a reason to do business with your company, and then ask yourself So what?’ Keep asking yourself this question until you’ve generated something very unique and special. For example, let’s imagine you run an accountancy firm, the conversation could go something like this… Why should I do business with you? - Because we offer a great service. So what? - Well Because we understand the needs of local businesses. So what? - Well Because our work is second to none. We offer an extremely professional and accurate service. So what? - In fact we believe our work is so good, we offer a full money back guarantee if your not satisfied. In fact , you could say we’re 100% accountable to our clients. You get the idea Now once you’ve generated your Unique Selling Point, there are then two MAJOR factors you must remember and commit to. Number 1) you must LIVE UP to your USP, you most honour it. It’s no good offering, say, a money back guarantee, and then not actually going through with it. Number 2) use your USP in every aspect of your marketing material literally scream it from the rafters. Include your USP in your brochures, direct mail, emails, website etc. It’s surprising how many business owners will spend more time (and money) deciding how their company logo should look, as opposed to working on something as crucial as their Unique Selling Point. Put it this way, when did a company logo last sell a service? Or put it another way, how much will it cost you to develop a Unique Selling Point? NOTHING. And how much income could this one concept generate for you? Maybe TENS of THOUSANDS. Andrew Ludlam is a client attraction expert, and Director of Maverick Marketing Solutions. Fly Fishing For Trout

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

By Wayne Smith Fly Fishing is such a traditional sport many refer to as an art form, and compared to other modes of fishing, incorporates so much to learn in terms of casting technique, and more particularly the study of the trout’s diet, and their imitations, that it can distract anglers from focussing sufficiently on their quarry’s habits and behaviour. If you want to catch more Trout, and particularly larger Trout, you need to know more about the Trout than you do about casting and their diet. The deeper I looked, the more things just didn’t make sense. I reared both Brown and Rainbow Trout in my lounge room aquarium and studied them closely. From atop steep banks of clear pools on the stream, I experimented and studied them. There was finally but one conclusion I could make. We, as fly fishermen, to a large degree, have been kidding ourselves for a very long time. Looking realistically at many of the trout flies, it seemed that the trout must either be half blind, or quite stupid, to accept many of them as the insects being imitated. Either way, it detracted from the achievement of having deceived them. The more I critically analyzed the whole routine of fly fishing, the more assumptions I recognised as having been made to compensate for our lack of understanding. At best, some of the assumptions may have been correct to some degree, but could never be proven or confirmed. At worst, some were just blatantly wrong. These assumptions have been cycled for so long they have just been accepted as fact. The Trout have been considered ‘Unpredictable’ because their behaviour or actions didn’t always fit what we would have expected when fly fishing. No-one, it seems, had ever thought about the possibility of their actions not matching our expectations because our beliefs could be flawed. I started evaluating alternative possibilities. Gradually I put the puzzle together. Eventually, those long standing questions had answers. The trout behaviour then became extremely predictable. I started taking advantage of these findings. Having realized I didn’t need to imitate anything to induce takes, I was able to construct flies which could do specific jobs for me rather than imitating anything. With each of the situations I encountered on the water mastered, the results just automatically followed. I had seemingly mastered the sport of fly fishing. Are There Men Quilters

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

By Penny Halgren Believe it or not, there are (and always have been) quite a few men whomake quilts, and make money making quilts. As a matter of fact, there was an article in our local newspaper (the San Diego Union Tribune) about a retired man engineer who is designing and making some really unique quilts - kind of 3 dimensional-looking quilts. Michael James has been around for years; I took a class from him in the mid 1980s, and he is now a professor in art / fabric arts at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Ricky Tims is a kind of cowboy quilter who took up sewing as a broke adult when he inherited his grandmother’s sewing machine. He travels the quilt guilds giving workshops and making speeches. Andthere are always quilts made by men hanging at local quilt shows. The Museum of the American Quilter’s Society in Paducah, Ky. sponsored a traveling quilt show that featured the work of 22 men — 26 quilts in all — many of whom are as macho as they come. In March, the show was in Greensburg, in April the Quilt Show was in Pittsburg and in June, the fine folks in St. Petersburg enjoyed the show. featuring men and their quilts. October 2005 saw the opening of a traveling show “Men of Biblical Proportion.” The goal for this exhibit was to present a theme about men, by men, and for men. Male characters of the Bible fit this description. It was aptly named Men of Biblical Proportion. This exhibit will travel to quilt shows, churches, museums and galleries throughout the US until the end of 2007. A Google search will turn up many more men in the quilting world. Guess it’s not just about making blankets - it’s about creating art that captures the spirit, imagination and history. Happy Quilting! Relationship Advice - What If You Live With A Depressed Partner?

Friday, December 14th, 2007

By Steve Roberts I was apparently born mildly depressed. I’ve always known low energy and a very low amount of enthusiasm. I’m 53 years old and I only beat depression for good two years ago. What a long time for my wife to live with someone depressed! In the beginning, we didn’t know any better. The critical sullenness that became more prevalent over the years was tempered with hope that the next job, or the next move, or even the next TV show would shake me out of it. How I regret that she had to put up with my mood all those years! What about your relationship? Is there hidden depression? Is it out in the open? Now is the time to face it. Let’s not put it off any longer. We’re not talking here about situational depression, that some call a case of having the “blues.” Situational depression comes, but then it goes. Right now we’re talking about the real thing that hangs on and on. The person’s mood is chronically low, self esteem suffers, and there is a pervasive negativity. It may be “Major Depression” which is the big deal, or more likely, it may just be like mine: a chronic inability to take joy out of life, while otherwise being able to function just fine. I always looked for distractions. Television was a common avoidance mechanism. Sugar was a payoff for feeling “low.” Caffeine was the stimulant of choice. And, my relationship with my wife was more often a “should do” rather than a “want to” or a “get to.” What about you or your partner? Are there too many distractions? Are there things that get too much attention while your relationship suffers? Are there any addictions starting to show: alcohol, drugs, over-eating, over-working, or over-something? There are many things that can cause some of these problems other than depression, but if you suspect depression, mild or severe, consider these things: 1. Talk it over with your doctor, minister, or counselor. You may need more than one opinion. Mild depression is so normal that some professionals will just dismiss it. It’s fine to feel good about quick assurances, but it is also OK to seek a second opinion. 2. Increase your exercise routine as a couple. Exercise releases those feel good chemicals called endorphins and elevates mood. It’s also a positive activity to do together that builds positive expectations for being together. 3. Increase your social activities as a couple (unless this is already one of those excessive things.) Depression normally leads to some degree of isolation. Being with people also elevates mood by producing those endorphins. (Hugs do, too, so hug a lot!) 4. If the doctor suggests anti-depressant medication, definately consider it. I first tried such medication around the age of 40. While my results were quite dramatic and out of the norm, it was as though I could see in color for the first time in my life! I suddenly knew what I’d been missing all those years, as well as, what my wife had been missing in me! 5. Buy an inexpensive copy of “Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy” by Dr. David Burns, along with the companion workbook. This “new” mood therapy isn’t so new, since I’ve been recommending this book for the last 15 years, but it is still the most user-friendly cognitive therapy you can find for depression. It is simple to use, but still a sophisticated approach. 6. Encourage “positive anticipation.” This means to look forward to things. We now know that this simple mental exercise causes the brain to secrete more dopamine, a neurotransmitter essential for a better mood. This mechanism is what really changed my life two years ago. I learned that I can control my mood simply by looking forward to what is before me. For instance, I might consciously look forward to the experience of writing this newsletter for you. I can enjoy the possibility that a percentage of readers willed be helped. I might anticipate my first client of the day and feel some level of joy that I get to see that person again. And, I will remind myself to look forward with positive expectancy to seeing my wife this evening. All these conscious choices of “how to be” will add dopamine to my system and will make me feel very good. Sometimes, just these simple steps will do what you need, but at times it is far more complex. That’s why we have professionals to help us out. So, make use of them! I regret the 15 years of married life that could have been so much better if only I knew of the treatment options. I don’t want you to have a similar experience! Depression? Take care of it now. It is so possible to feel good again. I know. Why You Require Marriage License

Friday, December 14th, 2007

By Arindam Chattopadhyay If two of you decide to take your dating relationship to the next level - marriage, you need to check the local requirement to obtain marriage license. Apart from government permission, you will also need love, financial stability, communication and constructive problem solving skills, fidelity. Do not forget emotional and passion in your marriage which are more important for the success of your marriage. Marriage License is necessary for various reasons. Marriage license proves that legally both of you can marry and also it prevents you to get into marriage as a sudden emotional outburst. This is by and large valid in most US states. You should know that marriage license is a matter of public record. Your request needs to be published in a newspaper. It ensures that all information you submitted was true, and if you lied about your marital state when you applied for your marriage license, someone can step forward. A copy of your marriage license will be stored in your county courthouse indefinitely. Marriage license proves that you got legal approval that you are free to marry, have obtained divorce or widowhood papers if necessary, are of legal age. Marriage license can be collected from City Hall or the marriage license bureau. Marriage license can be used for various purposes… Many private detectives can find out information about you and your history by going to a courthouse and requesting a copy of your license. This may not lead someone directly to you, but it can supply him or her with your married name if they dont know what it is, and can give them a lead as to where you may be living. Your marriage license may also be used by future generations if they are trying to put together their family tree. For genealogists, the marriage license is a great way to find lost ancestors, and to find out whom they married and where they lived. This might give them clues that they may have not been able to find otherwise. You may be able to find lists of old marriage licenses online, but in most cases, you will have to go to the courthouse to get one. PH Balance and Digestive Disorders: Breaking the Vicious Circle

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

By Maria Dolgova If you suffer from acid indigestion or acid reflux, chances are your body is unable to rid itself of toxic substances. Ahigh acid level in your upper digestive tract is anindication that acid levels are high elsewhere in your bodytoo. In a vicious circle, acid waste creates more acidwaste. Its important to take immediate measures to reduce youracid level throughout your body, to achieve a more balanced body pH level. If acid waste continues to take up residence in your bodys organs, you will be increasingly susceptible to degenerative diseases such as diabetes, arthritis and cardiovascular disease. Only by neutralizing and then eliminating the acids in your body can you begin the process of healing your digestive tract. THE RISK The primary symptom of acid reflux is obvious to those whohave it. During the digestive process, acid flows up intothe throat and causes a burning sensation. This is caused by a breakdown in the valve that separates the stomach from the esophagus. Its an indication that the acid-alkaline balance in the digestive tract has been disrupted. Unless that balance is restored, any attempt to treat or correct theacid reflux problem will provide nothing more than short-term relief. The accumulation of acid in the digestive tract is often theresult of eating the wrong types of food. Acid is not causedonly by excessive consumption of junk food. Anythingprocessed or overloaded with additives can upset the acid-alkaline balance in the digestive system. Even foods thatyou think are healthy can be highly acidic. In a digestive tract thats already out of balance, something as simple as cooking your food can lead to further problems. Cooking destroys natural enzymes in the food that assist with digestion. When your digestive system is unable to produce the necessary enzymes for digestion, the loss of natural enzymes makes the problem worse. Lifestyle also contributes to digestive disorders. Stressintensifies hyperacidity. Blood is diverted away from thestomach to the heart, lungs and muscles for the fight orflight response. The stomach is deprived of necessary oxygen and nutrients and cannot form sufficient enzymes for proper digestion. THE DAMAGE Acid reflux irritates and swells the mucous lining in thethroat, esophagus and stomach, which disrupts the digestive process. The irritation can form ulcers. The acid-alkaline balance of the digestive tract is also upset, leading to further accumulation of acid. The intestines are affected even more severely. Unlikedigestion in the stomach, the intestinal digestive processis meant to be alkaline, not acidic. Therefore, theintestinal walls do not have a thick mucous lining thatprotects from acid as the stomach does. The intestinal wallsare meant to facilitate the absorption of nutrients into thebloodstream. When acid inflames the intestinal walls, it disrupts theacid/alkaline balance of the digestive tract. It kills offthe friendly bacteria that aid in digestion friendlybacteria that are no longer present in much of our foodsupply. The intestinal inflammation also slows downperistalsis, the contraction of the colon that pushes foodalong the intestinal tract. Undigested food particlesputrefy and lead to greater accumulation of acid. The liver and gallbladder are also affected. When the liverbecomes overloaded with acidic waste that it can’teliminate, it crystallizes bile and acid waste intogallstones. The gallbladder has difficulty releasing bile, which inhibits proper digestion and further slowsperistalsis. Acid levels continue to rise, the liver becomesdamaged, and all other body organs become vulnerable todeterioration. Degenerative disease sets in. THE BENEFITS OF A BALANCED pH The best way to restore pH balance to your digestive tractis to eliminate foods that cause acid reflux. This alsomeans identifying and eliminating foods that cause anallergic response. Certain raw foods and whole foods and the right combination of vegetable juices can heal the digestive tract lining and eliminate further accumulation of acid waste. They can heal and prevent the formation of ulcers. Supplements that replace the friendly bacteria and thedigestive enzymes destroyed by acid can also help. Things You Ought To Know First Before Undergoing Liposuction Surgery

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

By Charlene Nuble According to the medical dictionary of Medline Plus, liposuction is the removal of excess body fat by suction with specialized surgical equipments, typically performed by a plastic surgeon. With the removal of excess body fat, the body appearance improves and evens out distorted body parts. Breasts, buttocks, abdomen, and the face area are some of the most popular body parts that undergo liposuction. Foremost reason why people resort to liposuction is for cosmetic reasons. They want to eradicate “love handles”, unsightly fat bulges, an abnormal chin line, etc. Liposuction also helps improve sexual function by reducing fat deposits on the inner thighs, thus allowing easier access to the vagina. Another reason for undergoing liposuction is body shaping that cannot be achieved by diet and/or exercise. A note of caution, liposuction is not a cure for generalized obesity. Liposuction is not as easy as just going to the doctor and telling him or her, “I want a liposuction right now.” People who want to have liposuction must meet certain criteria: 1) There should be a preliminary consultation. This includes history of the patient, a comprehensive physical examination, and a psychological health examination; 2) There should be a second consultation to give time for the patient to think over the planned liposuction surgery; 3) If the patient is married, the spouse’s presence may be required during the consultation; 4) The patient should ask questions about liposuction, express the reasons for the consultation, and must feel satisfied with the answers to their questions; 5) The patient must fully understand the pre-operative liposuction preparations, the liposuction procedures, and the precise post-operative liposuction care to avoid lethal complications; 6) The patient must have realistic expectations. Liposuction enhances the body appearance and boost self-confidence but it will never result to a perfect body. Because liposuction is a medical procedure, there are risks involved. Some of the complications that may happen upon having liposuction are: * Fluid imbalance due to the removal of a lot of liquid during liposuction and/or injection of large amounts of liquid during liposuction which can result to shock, heart problems, or kidney problems. * Infections happen after any surgery and some physicians prescribe an antibiotic to patients having liposuction so it is important to keep the wound clean. Infections may be life threatening such as necrotizing fasciitis (bacteria eating away the tissue) or the toxic shock syndrome caused by bacteria associated with surgery. * Embolism occurs when tiny globules of fat trapped in the blood stream blocks the blood flow to the tissue. This may cause permanent disability. Signs of pulmonary embolism are shortness of breath or difficulty of breathing. * Drug reactions or overdose from lidocaine is fatal. Lidocaine is a drug that numbs the skin and large doses of this is used during liposuction. The effects of lidocaine are lightheadedness, restlessness, drowsiness, slurred speech, muscle twitching, and convulsions. Overdose of this drug may cause the heart to stop which is naturally fatal. * Burns caused by the ultrasound probe during ultrasound assisted liposuction. * Visceral perforations or puncture wounds in the organs may require another surgery and can be fatal. During liposuction, the physician does not see where the probe (canula) is, so it is possible to harm internal organs. * Skin death (skin necrosis) occurs when skin changes color and fall off. This may also cause infection. * Paresthesias is an altered sensation at the site of liposuction. This may be in the form of increased sensitivity in the area or loss of feeling. Some cases of this are permanent. * Swelling * Death Given that the surgery had no major complications, recovery from liposuction can still be difficult. The liposuctioned area appears larger than before because of swelling. Special compression garments must be worn for two to three weeks to reduce swelling, bleeding, and to help contour the new body. The patient starts to feel better after a week or two after liposuction. Walking is recommended after liposuction to prevent blood clots forming in the legs. Finally, exercise and diet will help keep your new shape. ————————- Note: This article may be freely reproduced as long as the AUTHOR’S resource box at the bottom of this article is included and and all links must be Active/Linkable with no syntax changes. ————————- Charlene J.
