Interviewing Styles: Should You Learn Them?

May 1st, 2008 by emileewitney

By Judi Perkins There is much talk about Interviewing Styles: The Directive Interview, The Behavioral Interview, The Stress Interview, The Qualifying Interview, The This Interview, The That Interview. Articles outline different styles, list typical questions for each and tell you how to prepare for them, as well as suggesting appropriate answers. That’s all well and good, but there’s an obvious question here that begs to be asked: how do you KNOW which style you’ll encounter? When you phone to schedule the interview, do you ask, “Oh, by the way Mr. Interviewer, what interview style do you use? I’d like to study that one and ignore all the others.”? I absolutely endorse asking questions that you need to know the answers to (when it’s the appropriate time)……but THAT question is obviously an exception! So do you study all of the styles? Memorize every question that applies to each style and all the recommended answers to prepare for each one? And when the interview begins, you say to yourself, “AHA! It’s The Abstract Theoretical Look Sideways Style!” and then you know exactly what to say and do. What if you missed a style? And you find yourself saying “What the heck style is THIS? I don’t recognize it! HELP!” Which completely throws you off and you bomb the rest of the interview. Worrying about interviewing styles is ridiculous. Not only is it too much information to memorize, but it’s also a waste of time. An interview is nerve-wracking as it is without worrying about which style you’re going to encounter. The interview is about the company and how your presence will benefit them, the preparation (with the exception of your company research) is about knowing who you are and what you’re looking for. It’s not about the company or anticipating their interviewing style. Interview preparation is an absolute, non-negotiable, unequivocal must, but preparing by learning different styles is not. That’s why your interview preparation needs to be focused on learning about yourself, listing questions to ask, forming your answers to fundamental interview questions. You prepare by focusing on yourself because you are seeking your perfect job. You want to have the power to decide if you want to return for another interview instead of giving that power away. You want to be in control of your future. An interview is a sales process. The product is, essentially, you. And you need to be real about who you are, AND be prepared enough to interview well. Do THAT properly and the style you encounter is irrelevant. Interviewing is 85% prep and 15% common sense. Sometimes it does involve a bit of mirroring, but some of that is common sense. Do it without losing your individuality. For instance, if the interviewer is chatty, longer answers are okay. If the interviewer is crisp and serious, keep your answers focused and on the topic. Occasionally you’ll run into an interviewer who wants to make you sweat. You feel as if youre under a bright light - they’re grilling you, and you might as well have been fingerprinted. There’s no need to get all worked up (besides, they WANT you to). If that’s his interview style, what do you think it will be like to work for him? The answer to that should calm you down. You won’t care what he thinks, because you probably won’t want to return. Good money? Eventually you’ll hate your boss, then you’ll hate your job, then your life will be hell, because the salary won’t be worth it. Short drive? Eventually you’ll hate your boss, then you’ll hate your job then your life will be hell, because the drive will STILL be too long - you don’t want to go where you’re driving. Great advancement promised? After how long? How many people have held that position in the last 6 years? If you want to work for a control freak or someone who needs to appear tough and all-knowing, you’ve found the place. If he’s rapid firing questions at you, hoping to trip you up, let him feel important . Finish the interview and then cross the company off your list. Another interviewer might leave you thinking “What’s UP with this guy?” He seems sort of at a loss as to what to ask you. His questions are all open ended and don’t seem to have any firm direction or point. Just use common sense. You’ve done your interview prep work - jump in and sell yourself. That doesnt mean talk non-stop, but you don’t have to sit there and be uncomfortably silent for long periods of time either. Ease the awkwardness. Help him out. Lots of holes? Gracefully and professionally answer some of the questions you were prepared to answer, even though he hasn’t asked them. He may not know how to interview very well. (Face it, NO ONE - except maybe a human resources person - should have a lot of experience interviewing. If they do - they either can’t keep a job….or they can’t keep employees!) If your first interview is with human resources, often they can be crisply black and white, detail oriented, and by the book. Don’t let it throw you. If you know yourself and what you’re looking for, you’ve done your research on the company, and you’ve thoroughly prepped yourself for the interview, you’re much less likely to get flustered. Mirror their style, but don’t drown your personality. SOME human resources people are adept at giving you enough rope to hang yourself - so don’t be lulled into a warm cozy camaraderie. Watch their visual cues - which can be subtle. Follow your instinct, but follow their lead. They’re screeners, but in that sense, they are also decision makers. Don’t waste your time memorizing styles and how to handle each one. There ARE different interview styles, just as there are different types of people. The hiring authority’s interviewing style is usually a reflection of his personality. Stay aware of what’s happening at the moment, what you’re saying, what you’re learning, and how you’re feeling about what’s taking place. The more you’ve done your homework in accordance with what I’ve suggested, the more relaxed you’ll feel. The more relaxed you feel, the more confident and in control of your answers you’ll be, and the less likely you’ll be to worry about interview styles and types. When you know your background and who you are - the hows and whys and whats - you’re also less likely to be blindsided by an unexpected “type” question. So before you interview, it is imperative for you to give significant thought to: Why you chose your current field What environment you work best in and why What your personality traits are Why you liked and didn’t like your previous jobs and what you learned from them What your skills and talents are How you’ve handled diverse situations and what you might have done differently, or why what you did was effective - be able to back it up What you’ve accomplished in your previous positions and how those accomplishments contributed to the success of the department and the company In what areas you feel you need some work or polish Where you see yourself going and how you plan on getting there Why you chose to leave one company to go to the next In addition to knowing the answers to the above topics, you need to think about the most appropriate way to phrase those answers AND how they relate to what you’ve learned about the company from your research on line or at the library. In fact, some of the topics on the above list you should already have given thought to before you began your job search. If you don’t know who you are, what you want, in what circumstances you perform best and in what circumstances you don’t perform well at all, what type of management style helps you to flourish and give back to the company, and what the goal of your next job is - you won’t know what you’re looking for, much less be able to recognize it. Put effort into making sure you know who you are and what makes you that way. Know what you’ve accomplished and what contributed to those accomplishments, what motivates you and what turns you off. Spend time learning about the company with whom you’ll be interviewing. Make a list of questions to bring with you, and know what kind of answers you’re looking for. Be able to address issues by showing how who YOU are will benefit THEM. Then it won’t matter what style you encounter. You’ll be comfortable with any style you meet. And when they want you to come back for another interview, you can decide if you want to….or not. copyright: Judi Perkins, VisionQuest Judi Perkins has been a search consultant for 25 years in both the contingency and retained market, with a short stint in the temporary and local permanent placement markets. Brilliant Marketing Strategy Guarantees Success

April 28th, 2008 by emileewitney

By John Dir In addition to having worked out a successful formula for creating a popular television program, the “American Idol” success story displays multiple layers of marketing strategies that are nothing short of brilliant. Business leaders who want to find ways to improve their own marketing strategies could easily get a fast education from what is happening in this single media circus. Whether or not you are a fan of the program, you would do well to study the logistics of how this show has successfully turned itself into an almost unbelievable money making machine. The way the program works not only keeps it on the air, but has spawned an explosion of imitators which may not fully understand how to reproduce the complete formula for success. Here are just a few of the key factors that make this particular show a model for others to follow. The first strategy is to offer hundreds of thousands of average people a chance to pursue what might otherwise be an impossible dream. By holding auditions for the show across the country, and using these auditions as part of the build up for the program, the producers guarantee themselves a bank of viewers from the potential aspiring contestants who want to see themselves on television. These people will spawn hundreds of thousands more viewers by calling upon friends and family to watch the show for the possibility of seeing them appear somewhere in the course of the program. The dream of being seen and adored by millions means more to many people than the prize offered for winning the competition. The second strategy is displayed in how the programming for the show is arranged, with plenty of hype, jumping time slots, and finally settling in on a specific span over two nights of programming. Each week, the show’s celebrities remind the viewing audience how special the talent is for having made it in front of the camera from a pool of hundreds of thousands of other possible contestants. As the competition progresses, the contestants themselves are quickly transformed from their self directed appearances into carefully crafted images to enhance their entertainment value, and bring them up to star quality. The third strategy in capturing success incorporates participation from the viewing audience to “vote” for who remains in the competition. Whether or not viewers participate in this aspect of the marketing strategy, the producers engage the audience with this tactic, and gather significant demographic information on how successful the potential recording sales will be for both winners and losers of the competition. The audience participation tells the show how many records they will be able to sell from the complete line of talent, thus creating a host of new recording artists for the recording market. In the recording business, many people are given recording contracts, but a contract is no guarantee of success in selling the music. Knowing how many people are following the talent of an individual before any investment is ever made in marketing their work is a tremendous boost in gambling on their success. For the top three artists, further marketing is ensured by “sending them home” to receive the accolades of local media stations, politicians, and the screaming adoring fans which gather in the home town crowds. This fires up both local and national level pride in displaying the accomplishments of native son talent. In this year’s programming, “American Idol” pulled off a new level of explosive marketing by launching the “Idol Gives Back” campaign. This approach was particularly brilliant because in the final analysis, it was not the show giving anything but air time to help the poor and needy in Africa and America. A host of crafty performers who could do nothing but help their own careers by making an appearance on the show, volunteered their time and some of their own money to the cause, while the lion’s share of funding for the campaign came from sponsor and viewer contribution pledges, raising millions of dollars in a couple of night’s worth of hype. “American Idol” achieved its goal of giving back by raking millions more in from its audience and sponsorship. As the last bit of media exploitation winds down to crown the winner of the year’s competition, the show prepares to console its top ten performers with a nationwide money making tour that will help to build the excitement, support, and hype for next season’s display, and the millions more to be made from music sales. As long as the public does not tire of participating in their chance to fulfill dreams of over night fame and fortune, the “American Idol” will continue to enrich the pockets of everyone who helps to bring it to the screen. Knight in Shining Armor Syndrome

April 26th, 2008 by emileewitney

By Lucia Demasi Unless you just came out of a coma, you know that the late Anna Nicole Smiths ex-boyfriend is Larry Birkhead. He has been in the news since he announced he was the father of Dannielynn. One interviewer asked him why he continued to stay in the relationship despite Anna Nicoles drug use. He said he thought he could save her. He had knight in shining armor syndrome. In her book, Why We Love author Helen Fisher states that: millions of years of protecting and providing for women has bred into the male brain this tendency to choose women they feel they need to save. What separates man from animal is his ability to think and reason. Just because it may be natural for men to be chivalrous, it doesnt mean they cant place a limit on just how far they will go. Should they open a door, pull out a chair, take a womans hand when crossing the street or give her their jacket if shes cold? Absolutely. Should they try to save a woman whose life is a mess? They do so at their own peril. Men try to save damsels in distress because it makes them feel powerful, in control and manly. Sometimes they are afraid of women and think they wont be rejected if they fix a womans problems. They hide their inadequacies behind what looks like strength. They know they dont have their act together, so instead of working on themselves theyd rather work on someone else. Such relationships are doomed to fail. If these men really were strong, they would not be trying to save someone that appears to be a victim. They dont realize that aside from a few circumstances beyond ones control (acts of God, accidents, disease, etc.) ones position in life is based on who they are on the inside, not someone or something out there. There is an axiom that says: There are no victims, only volunteers. Knights believe that if the woman gets better, shell become the perfect girlfriend. The only problem is that if she does become healthy, she will not want to be with someone who is so flawed that he tolerated being with a broken-winged bird. Healthy people do not want to be with unhealthy people. On the other hand, if she doesnt get better, the man will never have the perfect girlfriend because he wont get his needs met. In addition, his fears of an intimate relationship will not be repaired by staying with an inadequate woman. Its a no-win situation. Why else do men choose damsels in distress? According to Dr. Laura in her book, Ten Things Men Do To Mess Up Their Lives other reasons for stupid chivalry are: guilt for past transgressions and lifestyles, feelings of real or imagined inadequacies, fear of the pain of abandonment, loneliness, ego aggrandizement, fears about womens (aka Moms) approval and acceptance and a fragmented sense of masculinity. If youre currently trying to be a knight in shining armor, whats your reason? Just because a man doesnt acknowledge that a woman is responsible for her circumstances, it doesnt mean those same circumstances wont come back to bite him in the butt at some future date. Larry Birkheads life is now chaotic as the result of trying to save a woman whose life was chaotic. Would you want to be in his shoes? Do You Really Need A Girlfriend?

April 24th, 2008 by emileewitney

By Rod Cortez “I want a girlfriend” is a phrase I read and hear a lot. I also have men ask me “how do I get a girlfriend?”. My usual response is “why do you want one so badly?” Somehow, somewhere some men have been conditioned to think that their lives would be more meaningful if they had a girlfriend. “But I feel like such a freak if I don’t have one,” says Jeremy, a 22 year old college Senior. “Most of my friends have one. I feel like a loser.” I hear this from men of all ages and backgrounds. The problem here I see is two-fold: first, that men who say these kinds of things do not have the different skillsets they need in order to secure a date virtually anytime. Secondly, there is an inherent problem in thinking that one NEEDS to have a girlfriend in order to feel more complete, popular, or whatever other reason you can think of. Happiness and fulfillment should come from INSIDE first and then having a partner, a girlfriend, or a romantic interest should be the icing on the cake. So if you are one of these men that feels and believes he has to have a girlfriend, that’s a big red flag that you are using that as a crutch. A crutch for what, you might ask. It’s a crutch for not facing the REAL, deeper issue(s) that drive that false belief that you have to have a girlfriend. Men who want a girlfriend are coming from a place of weakness, not power. When a man desperately wants a partner it makes him act and behave in a needy and desperate way. Women pick this up even before you approach them. They can see it in your posture, your eyes, the way you move your arms, and other aspects of your body language. Then when you talk they can hear it in your voice and where you place your hands. You shouldn’t “want” a girlfriend or “need” a girlfriend. You should choose to have one when you meet a woman that fits your criteria, won’t play silly games with you, and compliments your life, not impedes it. Men typically want a girlfriend for the wrong reasons. Men should “choose” to have a girlfriend, not “need” one because they are sucuumbing to social pressure or a feeling of insecurity or lonliness. There are times in my life where I did not have a girlfriend for several years. That did not mean that I did not date. I went out on plenty of dates, but I never called any of them my girlfriend. I’ve had women tell me after a few months that they wanted to move in with me and when I told them “no”, they gave me an ultimatum. Either take the relationship to the next level or she would end it. I would always end it right there on the spot. The fact is that my self-esteem and confidence are so high that I don’t “need” a woman to originate my happiness. I think of my life as dessert and that any woman who wants to join me is simply the whip cream and strawberry on top. I realize that sounds a bit corny, but it’s a very accurate metaphor. I’m not saying that having a girlfriend is a bad thing. In fact, it’s a good thing when it is done for the right reasons. So how does a man make himself more attractive? The list is nearly endless, but here are a few pointers that men need to seriously think about: 1. Physical Appearance And Hygiene - I used to worry about my height because I didn’t think I was tall enough to date tall, attractive women. That was a huge waste of time and energy. I finally realized that I needed to focus on what I could control, such as my weight, my muscle tone, the way I ate, using only one spray of cologne (instead of half the bottle), the whiteness of my teeth, my hairstyle, etc. 2. Confidence - I’m talking about natural confidence that oozes from within, not the phony “I’m-such-a-bad-boy” confidence that immature men think is “cool”. If you don’t have it now there’s only one way to get it: taking action; not just any action, but action that forces you outside of your comfort zone so that you actually grow. Think about it, if you have approach anxiety, you’ll never overcome it if you don’t approach. Remember the Rule of 25, which states you should eventually approach no less than 25 women per week until you can talk to any woman, any time, and any where. 3. Have A Life - Studies have shown that desireable men have active, social lives. Let’s face it, when a woman knows that other women desire you, your social value skyrockets. One way to increase your own social value is to have hobbies and interests. If you couple this with a growing social network, you will naturally find yourself a very busy person with plenty of social events and opportunities to meet new faces. I can go to any major city in the world and within 90 days I can build a social network of new faces and friends that would take an average man a lifetime to build. If you remained focused there’s very little you can accomplish. Do you still want a girlfriend? Or do you feel like you still need one? It’s very important that you take a look inside yourself to find the answer. You should never “need” a girlfriend. You should reach a point in your life where you “choose” to have a girlfriend on your terms. And that makes all the difference in the world. The Evolution of the Wedding Favor Box

April 22nd, 2008 by emileewitney

By Andy Powers Wedding favors date back to the early 17th century, when they were given to wedding guests as a mark of admiration. Wedding favor box gives the wedding couple an opportunity to show their uniqueness and creativity by giving something to the guests. It is a way of saying Thank you for being a part of their wedding celebration. The whole idea of giving favor box dates back to the early 17th century, when the upper classes used to give sophisticated gifts. They used to come in a small fancy box called bonboneire made of crystal or gold and usually carried bakery made delicacies, at a time when sugar was quite expensive. These boxes still remain a popular means of presenting a small token of appreciation to all who have been part of the wedding celebrations. Types of Wedding Favor Box Today the wedding favors boxes are most suited for giving candies, chocolates, wedding pastries or even cakes. But, one can replace eatables by delicate glassware, photo frames, key rings, and so on. They usually come in a small box tied with a satin ribbon. However, today different boxes signify different meanings taking into consideration the gifts they carry. For instance, specially packed Chinese boxes are ideal for gifting candles, cookies, and candies, or anything that can fit inside the box. Gifting candies remains one of the oldest and the most popular means of upholding this everlasting tradition. Choose According to Your Taste The design of the wedding box ranges from simple to flamboyant. As mentioned, bonboneire were usually fashioned in ceramics or gold and carried very expensive and precious stones. But the design depends basically on the personal tastes of the wedding couple, usually the bride. With time the concept of wedding favor box has become more innovative and stimulating. The gifts can vary from stylish wine and golf sets to elegant and classy glassware and silver wedding favors. They come in exclusive and stylish designs with beautifully crafted boxes. These boxes have continuously evolved over time and include envelopes, small bags, boxes, decorative tins and so on. They are usually packed in elegant gift wrappers and tied with a ribbon to give a sophisticated appearance. Creative Emulation

April 20th, 2008 by emileewitney

By Kevin Eikenberry In business we have a number of ways or tools that we use to stimulate improvement. Most of us could recite these in our sleep: Brainstorming Benchmarking Problem solving When these things fail, or we realize that perhaps there are better ways to do these approaches, we do the next likely thing and hire a consultant. (As a consultant, I am glad that people sometimes take this step). Each of these steps can be very valuable and powerful when done correctly. There are methods, approaches and steps that you can take to make each of these things (including hiring the consultant) more effective. The Problem The problem is the first three items on the list suffer from a similar problem they all become too introspective. Brainstorming too often becomes a short list of ideas that people have considered in the past, or things people tried at their last job. Benchmarking ends up being too incestuous. If you are benchmarking within your industry, everyone in the industry is looking at each other, and the bar may never be lifted high enough. Problem solving techniques are only as good as the ideas that are found to implement, and where do those ideas come from? Brainstorming and benchmarking. The Alternative The alternative is a phrase called creative emulation. I learned this phrase from marketing guru Jay Abraham, who has helped hundreds of companies and individuals improve using this technique and has personally made a fortune using it and teaching it. It is incredibly simple in concept, and amazingly obvious. But most of us dont do it often enough. Creative emulation requires studying other industries and businesses for the models and approaches that they use. Then thinking about how you could modify, adapt or creatively emulate their successes into your business. Some Examples Direct marketers have done this forever. Any good copywriting consultant tells you to build a clip file of ads and sales letters that are effective. By keeping this file of successful copy, you are able to refer to it for inspiration, ideas, unique phrases and more. The clip file is a perfect example of creative emulation. In leading training sessions, while there is benefit in having a whole group from the same organization, there are great benefits from having mixed audiences too even having people from different divisions or departments in the same company can give participants new insights, ideas and practices that they can creatively emulate back in their situation. In some types of training seminars, participants will be placed in the hot seat by the facilitator or trainer. In this situation the participant is asked very specific questions to help both them and the facilitator better understand their situation. Then the trainer will propose some very specific ideas that the participant can apply. On first glance this may seem like a boring event for other participants as one persons situation is explored, prodded and probed. The reality is that if the trainer does a good job of setting up the process, each participant can learn much by answering the same questions for themselves, reflecting on their answers and using the process of creative emulation to apply the lessons to their own business and situation. These are three very different situations, all of which use the process of creative emulation as a way to create new ideas and spawn new approaches. How to Do It The process is pretty straightforward: 1. Learn all you can about a successful business or business model. This includes reading, interviewing and researching it as much as you can. 2. Think about the strengths of that business or process and see how it might strengthen your situation. 3. Look for ways to emulate, modify or adapt those success approaches into your situation. Where do you find these model businesses? First of all it is important to realize that any business has some unique strength, even if they dont recognize it, and even if they may not be super successful overall. With this realization, anyone can become a case study for you! Read the local business section or the Wall Street Journal more carefully. Read business magazines in industries different than you own. Attend a conference as a guest of a friend in an industry completely different from your own. Learn more about the people you meet at your next networking event. Dont stop with exchanging names and business cards. Take real interest in their approaches and successes. These approaches can get you started. Brainstorming, benchmarking and problem solving are great tools in your tool bag, but remember you have other options. One of those options is creative emulation. You can apply it in many ways in your business or other professional pursuits. I wish you great success with this new approach. Holiday Indulgence Buldge - Clean Up Your Body!

April 19th, 2008 by emileewitney

By Theresa Ramsey, N.M.D. If you are one who is experiencing the holiday indulgence bulge - no problem. Bless the holidays for giving us permission to enjoy on all levels. Bless the New Year too for giving us permission to reestablish healthier grounds! Timing is everything, right? The rich, calorie dense, nutrient, sugar-laden foods and alcohol that tasted so good have now slowed our metabolism a bit, given our cells a little more of a challenge to work efficiently and now you have the opportunity to focus on cleaning house! Think back also about the emotional energy you expended while sharing time with more friends and family than usual, in addition to staying up later and possibly getting up earlier to beat the mad-mall-rush! How often have you made it to the gym or on your home exercise equipment? Most of our bodies, minds and spirits have been stretched just a little bit more than usual throughout the holiday season. What is real-life like after a long holiday season? Well, to get back on track, there are very efficient ways to clean house and to restore balance in your life. Feeling and looking your best are probably on the top of your priority list now more than ever. Let’s look at simple ways to regain and to create balance and overall good health. Are you getting enough rest? Are you getting at least 8-10 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night? If not, is there any way possible to get to bed a little bit earlier, and to create a sensual ritual of settling down one hour prior to sleep. Ideas for this are to turn off the television and to play soothing music, surrender to a warm bath, savor a calming cup of warm tea and lighting some candles while you journal a list of gratitudes for all the things you have in your life. Simply start with how you started your day and write "I am grateful for waking up to a beautiful day." What happened next? "I am grateful for sharing breakfast with my kids before left for school." And next? "I am grateful for getting stuck in traffic on my way to work as it gave me time to breathe and prepare for my day." The goal is to remember each event and put a spin of gratitude on each one whether it felt like a natural blessing at the time or not. Next, are you moving your body gently during mindless times like stretching, walking or yoga? Not only does your body age more gracefully with conscious exercise, it is one of the best forms of stress management if you’re not pushing it too hard, that is. Even if you are a hard-core exerciser, softening your routine as your body recovers can make all the difference in the world right now. Remember that you are a human-being, not a human-doing and the more you can be in the presence of your workout routine - which means not beating yourself up and needing to push harder and harder, the more benefit you will receive. Have you thought of ways to clean house? Your internal house that is. The vacuum of your body is your liver. It processes and prepares for elimination everything that you are exposed to from foods and beverages to medications and supplements. Just like you would clean your house, imagine your liver as a sponge that needs to be wrung out over and over again until the water comes out clean. This is done by consciously cleansing your liver through detoxification enhancement. There are supplements and specific protocols that assist the process however please begin by drinking at least half of your body weight in ounces of water per day while eating a diet as alive as possible. Foods with preservatives that sit in packages with a five-year shelf life do not provide any vital nutrients. Live foods like vegetables, fruits and flesh that have not been overcooked provide your body enzymes, substrates, amino acids and minerals that each cell requires to do its job. If your liver is fed its specific nutrients from foods like vegetables, especially the more bitter ones, the cells will cleanse more quickly. So, lots of water and lots of nutrient rich foods will nurture your liver and help it recover from the holiday challenges. At the same time minimizing or avoiding caffeine, sugar, artificial sweeteners, carbonation and alcohol-laden foods will be of significant benefit for the way you feel and therefore interact with your life.
